Egbe Omo Yoruba ti Baltimore" literally translates as "The Association of the Yoruba People in Baltimore", and is as such is a club whose aims and objectives include the fostering of unity amongst all people of Yoruba origin, both within the continent of Africa as and in the Diaspora, based in the Baltimore Metro area and vicinity. It is a chapter of a wider, umbrella group comprising so many such chapters in different parts of North America, including Canada.
The Baltimore Chapter is a purposeful and focused socio-political organization that seeks to promote the political awareness and economic well being of the masses of their kinsmen from Nigeria who reside in the metro area and other Africans who may be touched by these activities. It is the main aim of the present leadership to provide a far reaching opportunity for improvement of relations and other aspects of life of its members. This we seek to do by organizing programs that hold out the potential to ultimately sensitize the membership on the need to pursue agenda, corporate and individual, that add value to them in their host community as they also add value to their environment, i.e., the United States.
The current leadership of the association is under the chairmanship of Dr. Gabriel S. Tenabe of Morgan State University, while Mr. Fola Olumide serves as Secretary. The group pursues this objective by getting all its members involved in its programs. Thus, members are divided up to serve on six (6) different need-focused committees that include the following areas:
a.. Economic Planning, Business & Employment ("The Economic Group")
b.. Finance & Fund raising
c.. Education
d.. Culture
e.. Health & Social Welfare
f.. Political & Immigration
All members of the Egbe belong to a committee, contributing ideas to the growth of the association in their specialized areas.
The Economic group on May 3rd, 2003 organized a conference on 'Political and Economic Empowerment of Africans in the Diaspora'. The conference was in collaboration with four departments of the Morgan State University, Baltimore. Other committies of the Baltimore Chapter have various plans in the making.
Among the highlights of achievements of the Baltimore Chapter is the recent Election of one of our members Otunba Sunday Abegunde into political office at the recent National elections.
